Task 1. understand the purpose and design of idents
How is the brand identifiable over the years? Has anything remained the same? What has evolved?
Over the years the BBC have made their indent’s identifiable, they have used a picture of the world up until the late 80’s and since then they have used a circle symbol almost to represent the world. The one thing that has remained the same is the shape of the ident, the main way it has changed over the years is the colour of the ident and how they make the circle symbol, for example in 1964 the BBC ident was a plain background with a picture of the world spinning around and in 2009 the ident was of a few dogs running around in a circle and the BBC one logo appearing in the middle.
Try to find out the channel’s remit – what is its promise to viewers?
To inform, educate and entertain.
How has the ident been packaged and repackaged over the years?
The ident has changed a lot over the years but has also stayed the same, up until the late 90’s the BBC 1 ident was of the world spinning around and went from black and white to different colours in the 80’s, since 2004 the main symbol in the ident is a circle and this first started with three men in wheel chairs on a basketball court moving around in a circle and that has moved on to a few dogs running around in a circle for the 2009 BBC 1 ident.

When does the ident play?
The ident plays throughout the day on BBC1, And during the night.
How often is it visible during 3 hours viewing time?
The ident is visible after each programme and before each programme, so depending on how long the programmes are during the three hours depends on how many times the ident is shown.
How many ident does the channel currently use?
There are currently 17 ident’s on the channel.
Is there a theme across the ident? What remains the same?
The theme across the channels ident is of a circle, the main thing that stays the same is the circle symbol in each ident.
Task 2 Understanding the opportunities and limitations of on-screen graphic representation
BBC Ident
BBC One:
over the years the BBC One ident have been different but have also kept some of the same ideas, for example in 1969 the BBC introduced there first coloured ident, they had kept the same image with the world spinning around but this time they had made it with colour, these days the BBC don’t use the world symbol in their ident instead the keep the idea of using a circle and use different things to create the circle symbol.
ITV ident
ITV1:
ITV have always changed their ident over the years, over the past couple of years ITV have used many effects in their idents, for example in one of the recent idents of a woman riding a
bike down a street at night they used effects and fly like lights come out of the lampposts and fly around.
Channel 4 Ident
Channel 4:
channel 4 have been creative over the years with their idents, during the idents they make the channel four sign using effects and ‘CGI’ (computer generated imagery) in the ident channel four use the background and props from the area they are film to make the ‘4’ symbol for example in one of the ident they are filming on a street with a food market and they uses the food stalls and surrounding area to make the ‘4’ symbol, this works well and makes all the ident’s some of the best across the channels.

Task 3. be able to originate and plan television idents to a brief
Narrative Structure
Storylines
Pac-man is chasing the fruit around while coloured ghosts are chasing Pac-man around the board, another idea we have had is instead of Pac-man being chased by the ghosts we would have Pac-man chasing the ghosts because they are taking his fruit drops
Sets/Backgrounds
We are going to having a rectangle, square or circle board with blocks spread out to make a maze like structure for the character to move around and collect the fruit circles or squares , we are going to try a range of backgrounds, for example different colours and different shapes different layouts for example diagonal mazes straight mazes or curved. We are using plastercine to make Pac-man and the ghosts and using Lego for the layout and backgrounds.
Scenarios
Pac-man goes out to collect the fruit drops left by the four ghosts and while he is the four ghosts set out to stop him stealing their fruit drops, Pac-man has three lives to eat them all before its ‘game over’ along the way he can eat these special fruit drops that make the ghosts eatable and to stop them from eating him for 20 seconds.
Audio/Soundtrack
For the audio/soundtrack the best sort of music would be up tempo songs because of how fast the characters move or to make it feel more like a chase scene and more tense for the audience to watch to make it feel more exciting.
Task 4 be able to produce a television ident
